Their Story:
In anticipation of their first baby’s arrival, Pockets and Cristina Alvarez began shopping for baby furniture. They soon discovered that they were having a hard time finding what they were looking for.
“The selection of quality furniture for babies or kids was limited, and since we were already in the furniture industry, Cristina convinced me to produce a few pieces,” remembers Pockets. Shortly after their son Andrew was born in 1996, the business had found its niche.
As their family grew (Matthew was welcomed in 1999 and Elijah in 2001), so did the success of the business and their reputation for making the best quality and most beautiful pieces around. Newport Cottages manufactures and distributes a high end line of baby and kids furniture nationwide through specialty shops, boutiques and interior designers.
Their customers include Halle Berry, Minnie Driver, Tori Spelling, Victoria Beckham and other well known celebrities.
Pockets takes great satisfaction in guaranteeing that their pieces are manufactured locally in Southern California, using select hardwoods. “We never use inferior products such as particle board, MDF or other synthetics.”
Behind the scenes Pockets and Cristina brainstorm together on just about everything. While Pockets designs and builds, and brings entrepreneurial spirit to Newport Cottages, Christina’s decorative flair and eye for design completes each project.
Newport Cottages is available through fine furniture showrooms and retailers nationwide, as well as through their company owned retail location in Fashion island, Newport Beach.

Q: What is your process?
A: Newport Cottages manufactures their furniture in Southern California using only select hardwoods. Pockets is the man behind the design and construction, and he takes great pride in ensuring that each piece is built with the best quality materials using old world techniques. The result? Newport Cottages heirloom pieces of furniture are as beautiful as they are built to stand the test of time.
While Pockets plays the roles of builder and businessman, Cristina is the resident designer with her passion for decor and love of color.
Q: what have you both learned over your 15 years in business?
A: We have discovered that there is a strong demand for high quality children’s furniture, especially USA made products. Our customers hold us to the highest standards and we love to exceed their expectations.
Q: What are some of the pros and cons to running a family business?
A: The pros of a family business is just that we are a family. Everyone truly cares for one another and that make us all put our heart and soul into everything we do. Each piece is a part of us. The only cons would be running on a limited budget and dealing with the rising costs of manufacturing in the US. But we believe our sacrifices are worth it in the end.
