Today we are kicking off our birthday week celebration in honor of our creative director (Tana Hallows) + our style editors (Chelsey Mass) birthdays they celebrated this past weekend…and a little fun fact, their birthdays happen to be on the same day!  We are excited to share more birthday party inspiration throughout our birthday week celebration…so stay tuned as we have lots of fun things coming at you this week.

Oh boy, don’t we all love sugar cookies? These little poodle cookies are a favorite and would be perfect for a dog themed party, a neighborhood gift or just a little fun for the kiddos!   We’ve shared the tutorial on how to make these fun sugar cookies before, here, on moms best, but the possibilities of these cookies are endless, and today it’s poodles! Click here to get the step by step instructions on how to flood + frost these fun cookies once you have them baked! I’m sharing a few new tips below to make frosting these cookies easier!

Here’s a helpful tip, if you’re making these for the first time. Make sure the frosting is pretty runny, this way you can use that frosting for “flooding” once you have the runny frosting made, then divide up the frosting into little bowls. Mix your color(s), than fill your frosting bags or bottles with the runny mixture, set aside a small amount to make a thick consistency. Just add additional powdered sugar to make your “outline” thick consistency.

Another tip, if you’re making cookies but want a certain color don’t be afraid to mix!  I actually like to buy just the cheap McCormick’s food coloring only the “neon version”. Then I just start mixing yellow in with pink, pink into orange, purple into pink to make my own custom colors! The possibilities are ENDLESS! Have fun, but never mix more than 2 colors together, you might end up with a brown-ish color!

poodle sugar cookies

Sugar cookie recipe:

1 Cup butter, softened
1 Cup granulated white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 cups all purpose flour

Bake 350 for 8 minutes! Recipe adapted from here, click here for the rest of the directions. Ps. I like a thick cookie so I made sure not to roll my cookies “too thin” see photo above.

1/4 cup meringue powder
1 cup cold water (NOT hot)
2-4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix these all together, just watch the consistency, if your needing thicker frosting for piping then add powdered sugar. If you need thinner, add water, and remember just a couple drops goes a long way.
